The iPhone 4 is still the most popular smartphone in the US with Ireland traditionally mirroring the US market. This means that, despite the surge in popularity for Android phones, businesses need to acknowledge that consumers still love the iPhone. The iPhone 3GS is the second most popular smartphone handset and the recent release of the iPhone 4s means that iOS should not be neglected as a mobile platform.
When developing an app you need to remember the reason the app is being developed. The two main motivations for app development are to generate income or to create brand awareness, marketing and customer interaction. It is proven that apps on the Apple App Store are more downloaded then those on the Android market, so you should be able to sell more apps (if this is your motivation). It is also proven that, because of the more stringent approval process for apps on the Apple App Store there are less ‘junk’ apps, which will have a positive effect your brand image. Furthermore, the smartphone market in Ireland is split almost evenly between Android and iPhone. By not developing for iOS you are likely to miss a large percentage of your market.
